Welcome to the Wright Flyer Project Website!!
Honoring the Wright Brothers by researching, building, and flying a modern representation of the 1903 Wright Flyer. Our project is brought to you by the Tom Wathen Center based from the Flabob Airport
Dreams of Flight
The video was put together by Story4 about the wrightflyer project trajectory and the costruction of the flying replica at Flabob airport. The 1903 Wright Flyer possessed all of the technical features necessary for powered, manned controlled flight that had eluded others for centuries. It did require considerable skill by the pilot, so much so that no precise replica has been successfully flown since that eventful day. The aircraft ran 40 feet along a wooden starting rail on level ground and then rose into the air. It flew 120 feet in 12 seconds. This was the first fligtht in history in which a machine carrying a man had raised itself by its own power into the air, had flown forward under control without a reduction in speed and had landed at a point as high as that from which it had started. The era of flight had begun.
Get Involved
A wide variety of skills were needed for the Wright Flyer Project, ranging from analysis, design, construction and testing, to purchasing, historical, photography, record-keeping, facilities and business. AIAA retirees with a yearing for building a vintage aircraft found this project particularly satisfying.
Since it was – and still is – a “labor of love”, the “requirements” for team members called for a commitment to be active i.e. devote some time each week: Design, aerodynamics, controls, propulsion, propellers, wood, fabric, rigging, testing, structures, weight, construction, carpentry, planning, administrative, historical, literature, publicity, photography, publications, business operations.
