Niel Armstrong Day

On the 55th Anniversary of the first lunar landing by Niel Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, project members who worked on the Apollo Program will host an open house at the Wright Flyer hangar 9 at Flabob airport. (4130 Mennes, Jurupa Valley, CA 92509, just west of the cafe).  The event starts at 9:00 am on July 20, 2024 and closes by 1:00pm. It pays homage to the systematic research and development that the Wright Brothers employed to proceed from observations of birds flying, thru a series of proofs of concept to the first controllable powered aircraft public demonstrations. Their process represents the first systematic aeronautical engineering development. Others then elaborated on the process leading to the first flight and landing on the moon just 65 years 7 months later. Key contributors to the Apollo Program include:

Jack Cherne (RIP) Project Engineer on the Lunar Module Descent Engine (LMDE)

Robert Sechrist, Logistics, Calibration, Training on the Command & Service Modules

Fred Culick, PhD, (RIP) Rocket engine combustion stability theorist

Gary Moir, PE, Command Module Inner Structures Engineer on hatches, crew couch, recovery systems and later conversion of the LMDE to Thor Delta 2nd Stage engine.

Chuck McPhail, (RIP)

Vance Jacqua, (RIP)

Jim Mendralla, (RIP) Technical Emmy winner. He recorded video of Lunar landing.
